Celebrating International Women’s Day: Why And How?

When we think about the women we love most, it is sweet to say that they are special everyday, all-year round. We give them all our love and we want the best for them. You will be glad to know that there’s this one particular day of the year which is dedicated uniquely to women all around the world - that’s International Women’s Day (IWD) which falls on the 8th of March.

Reflecting upon history, the journey of womanhood has not always been easy. There were times where women were not seen as equal and they had tougher jobs, lesser pay and an underappreciated voice. Throughout history, we have seen that it is only through utter perseverance and revolution do we create a new dimension for women. Today, IWD honours the achievements of women, across the globe of different cultures, where gender equality and women’s rights are celebrated.

You may wonder - how did IWD begin?

The IWD which falls on 8 of March every year has a rough origin. The idea was first coined in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York City, demanding voting rights, better pay and shorter working hours.

A year later, the first IWD was initiated in the US to commemorate the strike. Subsequently in 1910, a German feminist, Clara Zetkin, pushed for it to be a celebrated holiday in Europe.

Many years later in 1975, it was declared as the year of the women and the United Nations called for 8 of March to be recognised as International Women’s Day. In 1977, the Day was officially formalised by the United Nations General Assembly.

Today, IWD is celebrated by nations across the globe!

Though the spirit of IWD remains unchanged, it did not stop different nations from coming out with their own way of commemorating the occasion. Here are some of the ways IWD is celebrated by different nations:

India, Russian & Turkey

Men congratulate women with flowers or small gifts, sometimes coupled with blessings and congratulatory greetings.

Germany & Nepal

IWD is recognised as an official national public holiday.

China

Women in the labour force are often granted half a day off work.

Italy

Men would gift women with Mimosa Blossoms, a flower which carries the gesture of love similar to roses.

1. Take a break and review your overall health

It goes with the saying that women are more tenacious when it comes to dedicating time for the family and work. However, don’t let this stop you from keeping your overall health in check. Head for a comprehensive body check and don’t miss out on getting started with your own exercise routine.

Practicing selflessness is a great way to commemorate the day. You could start by supporting a friend’s business or it may be as simple as catching up with your sisters to see how they’re doing. You can even support a women’s right organisation. Here are some organisations to consider:
